Archaeologists use several different kinds of reconnaissance to gain information before they carry out any excavations.

There are four main reconnaissance methods:

1) Desktop study - the study of documents and records inc maps.

2) Surface survey - Landscape survey, Fieldwalking, coring and augering, shovel pit testing.

3) Geophysics and geochemistry.

4) Aerial survey.
